The University of Auckland offers adequate accommodation for students during the school term, with some halls open for lease in the summer. However, demand is high in the weeks before the start of term because of new students coming in early to get settled. Fortunately, there are a lot of quality hotels within 5 km / 3 miles from the university campus and providing easy access to major tourist attractions and city facilities.
The Mercure Hotel in downtown Auckland is easily accessible from major transport stations, including the Britomart Transport Centre and the ferry piers. All 189 rooms offer cable and satellite TV, Internet access, pay-per-view movies, and heating and air-conditioning facilities. For those on a budget, the City Central Hotel is a great choice. For a low as NZ$100, you get large, comfortable bedrooms, access to an in-house restaurant, and ample parking space.
Student Accommodation
During the term, students can choose from three types of residence halls: catered, self-catered, and homestay. Recent school leavers usually opt for catered halls, which provide regular meals seven days a week, with costs included in the rent. Older and postgraduate students prefer the self-catered residences, where a communal kitchen is provided to let residents prepare their own meals. Homestays allow students to live with a host family, with dinner provided on weekdays and three meals provided on weekends.
